This is a damn shame. First off why would be the question I want answered. This is the reason I'm not excited to bring a child into this world as of now. For what so I can worry about them every time they step a foot outside the door. This story is just so heart breaking. I just pray they find whomever did this and take them off the streets ASAP!
Crisis teams were at a Chicago high school on Monday to help students and staff deal with the loss of a student who was shot and killed a day earlier while trying to earn extra money shoveling snow.
Ronald Hayes, 17, was found dead on a sidewalk on the 1300 block of West Hastings Street with a gunshot to his head, authorities said.
“No mother should have to bury her child,” said Hayes’ mother, Cathy Booker. “He was going to be my first child to graduate from high school. He was going to take me to prom this year because he knew I had never been to prom.”
Booker said her son was a “good kid” who had dreams of becoming a police officer. He was shot while shoveling snow and spreading salt near his home on the 1300 block of West Washburne Avenue.
Banner Academy West High School principal Byron Stingily said he knew Hayes well and described him as a very good student.
Chicago police said Hayes had gang ties, but that’s an allegation his mother denies.
“How many gang bangers go to school and try to make money shoveling snow?” she said.
Chicago police said they had no suspects and no one in custody in connection with the shooting as of Monday afternoon.
